Name: Will Flockhart

Age: 20

School: The Rockhampton Grammar School

yLead involvement: yTeam, ASLC ‘15, Thrill-Out

Favourite quote: “There are people who make things happen, there are people who watch things happen, and there are people who wonder what happened. To be successful, you need to be a person who makes things happen.”

A: Hey there Will! You’ve been around yLead for a while now – what is it about yLead that you love so much and makes you keep coming back to yTeam?

W:  Well there are two reasons why… The first is I like to treat it as a form of personal development and a reminder about how to be an authentic leader and person in life. I am a firm believer in ‘practice what you preach’, and yTeaming is a great way to remind myself and reset my mindset! The second reason is it’s a great way to procrastinate from University and I don’t feel guilty for it.

A: You grew up in Rockhampton, but now rep the NSW yTeam (we LOOOOVEEE having you help us out at Sydney In Schools!!). What are you doing in Sydney?

W: So I moved to Sydney back in 2016 to study Health Science majoring in Sociology and Healthcare Policy at the University of Sydney and I absolutely love it, plus this is my last semester before I graduate, YAY. I also just got accepted into a postgraduate course in nursing at Sydney so I have at least another 2 year in this beautiful but busy place.

A: Outside of studying  and yTeaming, what do you love filling your time with?

W: I like to go ‘Brunching’ – it’s a new term that I have been taught by my friends and involves going to new places for brunch every week all over Sydney. I absolutely love it, who would have thought smashed avo on toast is so subjective?

A: What is one of the biggest lessons you’ve learnt throughout your time with yLead that you apply to your life?

W: It is how important leadership is, not just in the sense of the word, but how to embody it in the right way. Leadership is a quality that everybody is looking for – it is an ingrained word in society today that everybody uses, but very few fully understand what it is. Leadership is an ongoing process that never stops, and yLead has taught me two things… first of all, it is not about the badge and being at the top or the loudest, it is that some of the finest leadership styles are those that take on the awareness that ‘leadership is any action that makes the world I touch a better place’. Second is that collaborating and celebrating individuality makes for some of the best brainstorming and planning sessions. It still astonishes me today to hear and see some of the ideas that people come up with when they have this mentality.

A: And finally, if you could tell your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

W: Just be you and everything else will follow. Plus it is important to network… it’s not what you know, but who you know that will help you in life.
